AKINSANYA, AJAYI, IWUAGWU, DAN-OLOGE AND ODUBIYI EMERGE AS DEANS AS ADEJOBI BECOMES PIONEER DEAN OF THE NEW SCHOOL OF ECCE & PED
The Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, has concluded the election and appointment processes for Deans across its six Schools, marking the beginning of a new four-year administrative cycle within the institution. The elections, which were conducted between Monday, 24 August and Wednesday, 26 August 2020, produced new Deans who are expected to provide academic and administrative leadership in their respective Schools.
In the College system, the position of Dean is ordinarily occupied for a tenure of four years. At the expiration of a Dean’s tenure, a new election is conducted to determine the academic staff member who will assume responsibility for the leadership of the School. The 2020 elections therefore provided an opportunity for the College community to select new leaders following the expiration of the tenure of the previous Deans.
Prior to the restructuring that led to the creation of a new School, the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, comprised five major Schools. These were the School of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Education, School of Languages, School of Sciences, and School of Vocational Education.
However, as part of the institutional restructuring, a new School was created out of the former School of Education. This development increased the number of Schools in the College from five to six. The newly structured Schools became the School of Arts and Social Sciences; School of Early Childhood Care Education and Primary Education; School of Education, also referred to as General Education; School of Languages; School of Sciences; and School of Vocational Education.
The creation of the new School of Early Childhood Care Education and Primary Education was particularly significant, as the School was scheduled to commence with the 2020/2021 academic session. Mrs A. O. Adejobi was designated as the pioneer Dean of the new School, making her the first person to occupy the position in the newly established academic unit.
NEWLY ELECTED DEANS
Following the elections conducted across the various Schools, five Deans emerged through the electoral process, while the pioneer Dean of the new School was designated as part of the restructuring arrangements.
The newly elected Deans are:
Mrs Taiwo Adedayo Akinsanya – Dean, School of Arts and Social Sciences
Mr A. O. Ajayi – Dean, School of General Education, formerly known as the School of Education
Mrs Stella Ifeyinwa Chibuzo Iwuagwu – Dean, School of Languages
Dr Adebowale Iyabo Dan-Ologe – Dean, School of Sciences
Mr James Abiodun Odubiyi – Dean, School of Vocational Education
In addition, Mrs A. O. Adejobi became the pioneer Dean of the School of Early Childhood Care Education and Primary Education, which was scheduled to commence in the 2020/2021 academic session.
The emergence of these academic leaders marked an important stage in the administrative development of the College. Each Dean would be expected to provide leadership within his or her respective School and contribute to the achievement of the institution’s academic and administrative objectives.
CONTESTANTS FOR THE DEANSHIP POSITIONS
The various Schools presented candidates for the Deanship elections, with some Schools having competitive elections involving two or more contestants, while others had only one candidate.
The School of Arts and Social Sciences had three contestants. They were:

Dr T. O. Salaudeen
Dr A. A. Olorunsogo
Following the election, Mrs T. A. Akinsanya emerged as the successful candidate and became the Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences.
The School of Vocational Education had two contestants:
Mrs F. O. Ogunwemimo
Mr J. A. Odubiyi
At the end of the electoral process, Mr J. A. Odubiyi emerged victorious and was elected Dean of the School of Vocational Education.
The School of Languages also had two contestants:
Mrs S. I. C. Iwuagwu
Dr P. E. Ezenandu
Mrs S. I. C. Iwuagwu emerged as the successful candidate and subsequently became the Dean of the School of Languages.
Similarly, the School of Sciences presented two candidates for the election. They were:
Dr I. A. Mofikoya
Dr A. I. Dan-Ologe
Dr A. I. Dan-Ologe emerged as the winner and became the Dean of the School of Sciences.
The School of General Education, formerly known as the School of Education, presented a single candidate for the Deanship position. Mr Ayo Ajayi was the lone candidate and was consequently elected without opposition as the Dean of the School.
The newly created School of Early Childhood Care Education and Primary Education, which was scheduled to commence operations in the 2020/2021 academic session, had Mrs A. O. Adejobi as its pioneer Dean.
A NEW ADMINISTRATIVE ERA
The conclusion of the Deanship elections ushered in a new administrative phase for the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta. The development was also significant because it coincided with the expansion of the College’s academic structure from five Schools to six.
The restructuring created a distinct academic space for Early Childhood Care Education and Primary Education, while the existing School of Education continued as the School of General Education. With Mrs A. O. Adejobi assuming the position of pioneer Dean of the new School, the College established its first formal academic leadership structure for the newly created unit.
The successful completion of the elections across the Schools demonstrated the College’s established process for selecting academic leadership at the School level. The elected Deans, together with the pioneer Dean of the new School, would form an important part of the academic leadership structure of the College for the new administrative cycle.
