NCE Academic Assessment, Examination Regulations, Grading System and Graduation Requirements
Continuous Assessment
Continuous Assessment (C.A.) is an essential component of the overall assessment of students enrolled in the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) programme. The final grade awarded for a course is determined by combining the Continuous Assessment score with the end-of-semester examination score.
In Colleges of Education and other institutions awarding the NCE, the approved assessment weighting is 40% for Continuous Assessment and 60% for the semester examination.
The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) approves the following guidelines:
A weighting of 40% for Continuous Assessment and 60% for semester examinations shall be adopted by all Colleges of Education, considering the level of academic work and participation expected from students across the various programmes of study.
Continuous Assessment shall be conducted through both formal and informal assessment methods and shall constitute an important component of students' overall assessment. Depending on the discipline, assessment may take place through workshops, laboratories, studios, fieldwork, assignments, and other appropriate activities.
For the effective implementation of the course credit system and Continuous Assessment scheme, each College should provide essential information storage, retrieval, and analysis facilities, including microcomputers and relevant software such as word-processing and analytical applications. These facilities can enhance access to analytical tools and improve the efficiency of grading processes.
The standard of teaching and instruction, as well as the quality of examinations, should be improved through student opinion surveys and peer evaluation aimed at assessing the quality of teaching across courses. Lecturers whose teaching is evaluated should be informed of the outcomes, which should be discussed with them individually as a basis for improvement.
Semester Examination
Semester examinations shall be conducted at the end of each semester. The assessment structure shall consist of 40% Continuous Assessment and 60% semester examination.
Continuous Assessment may comprise tests, written assignments, reports, practical work, and other appropriate assessment methods.
To pass a course, a student must obtain a minimum aggregate score of 40% from the Continuous Assessment and examination components.

Percentage Score (PS or Per. Sc.)
The percentage score represents the numerical mark obtained by a student in a course or assessment.
Letter Grade (LG)
The letter grade represents the classification assigned to a student's percentage score, such as A, B, C, D, E, or F.
Grade Point (GP)
The Grade Point is the numerical value assigned to student's letter grade.
Grade Point Average (GPA)
The Grade Point Average is the average of the weighted grade points earned in all courses taken during a semester.
To calculate the GPA, the Grade Point obtained in each course is multiplied by the number of credit units assigned to that course. The resulting values are then added together and divided by the total number of credit units taken during the semester.
Formula:
GPA = Total Weighted Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Units
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)
The Cumulative Grade Point Average is the up-to-date average of the Grade Points earned by a student throughout a programme of study. It serves as an indication of the student's overall academic performance at any point during the training programme.
