Over a long period of time, past questions have been used in preparation for examinations, it has been of great value to students across various higher institutions. Past questions have been reported to have improved the performance of students in writing examinations.

Past questions assist students to understand and to familiarize with likely examination questions, time, strength, weaknesses and technicalities of questions (especially oral and theoretical questions). With the study of past questions, students should be able to attempt 60% or more of each year’s question correctly. Students are expected to attend at least 70% of class attendance and ensure to write necessary lecture notes, and purchase, rent or borrow the textbooks particularly for reading and understanding purposes). This helps students to relate to areas in the past questions which cannot be answered personally. The benefit of past questions cannot be exhausted as it is emerging. Below are some benefits that make emphasizes to the usefulness of past questions:

1. Past questions enables students to identify possible number of questions that will be set in the examination. This is very important because it will enable each candidate adjust to their preparatory speed.

2. Past questions helps students ti understand the likelihood of examination duration. This is very imperative for students because if you do not practice with time, in the examination hall, meeting up with the given timeframe will be very difficult. Students are not often asked to answer all questions but to attempt all. Hence, each student must be ready to work at their own pace in order to be fast as they can.

3. Past questions allow students to understand the number of alternative choices provided by your examiner. Knowing that they have options and this gives them the understanding needed to answer the best questions the students know first, rather than attempting the questions in 1,2,3,4 order especially in theory parts.

4. Since students are familiar with past questions, they will be able to work out their own time which is as a result of the required time for each subject/question.

5. Examination questions can be technical at times. Two identical correct answers can be given for a particular question. Also, one objective questions can as aid which can be used to answer another objective question. 

6. Past questions helps students to identify  strength and weaknesses and capitalize on it. We all know that there are some subjects that seems more simpler than others. Understanding this helps students to first answer the subjects they know and like the most before moving to other less interesting and difficult questions. The trick is that if you spend the bulk of your examination time answering the subjects you like most, then you are sure of being faster than when you waste all your precious time on the difficult subjects/topics.

7. Past questions helps students understand which area of the questions that are more important than others. In doing so, students spend more time on the questions that are more important and give them more marks than others. This technique can help if there is limited time.

8. The benefits of past questions cannot be totally discussed. It is usually helpful to prepare for exams with past questions. Past questions are helpful tools for preparing for examinations as they provide students with practical insight into how the examination body sets their exams, how the exams students are preparing for might look as well as key themes or subject areas likely to be touched. To score high in any examination, there is need to prepare adequately. This is why it is important for candidates to use past questions to prepare. Students can revise past questions to find out about the formats and pattern for questions.
