SANDWICH PROGRAMME

Sandwich Programme means higher institution programmes designed to accommodate usually candidates who are working-class but aim to further their education. These applicants are usually graduates from a course but wish to continue learning and acquire a degree. Other categories introduced to the sandwich programme are students who did not register for jamb Post-Utme. A sandwich programme is usually meant for teachers. These teachers are probably already teaching in schools and when they have holidays, they dedicate that period to their studies at sandwich centres. Other working class people enroll in the programme. However, SSCE holders who are not working yet (or already working) can still apply depending on the terms a school makes available to them. For example, such SSCE holders may be admitted for a 5 years course which an ND or NCE holder take for only 4 years.

MISSION OBJECTIVES OF SANDWICH PROGRAMME

*To provide in-service training programmes for teachers in order to improve their professionalism.

*To update practicing teachers knowledge on current development in their disciplines.

*To provide instructional courses leading to Bachelor Degree in Sciences, Arts and Social Science, Vocational and Technical courses with bias for teaching.

*To accommodate candidates who are not privileged to pursue full time university education programme.

*To encourage life long education.

*To provide basis for cross fertilization of knowledge and idea through conferences, seminars, workshops, and study groups for the purpose of improving instruction and learning.

*To in-still professionalism ethics in students during the course of study.

*To produce graduates that would be able to teach competently and efficiently at the primary and the secondary school levels.

PRE-NCE PROGRAMME

PRE-NCE is the programme meant for students intending to enroll in a College, while PRE-DEGREE is run in a university. PRE-NCE is a one year programme for students awaiting their JAMB result prior to their official registration to the main campus. PRE-NCE programme is a preparatory programme for intending students who wish to study in a College. After a one year period, PRE-NCE result will only be applicable if the candidate passes his/her JAMB examination.

Goal of the Pre-NCE

The goal of the preliminary Nigeria Certificate in Education (Pre-NCE) programme is to produce qualified candidates for admission into the standard Nigeria Certificate in Education programmes in the area of Science, Vocational and Technical Education, Nigerian Languages, French, Music and any other field of specialization as necessity may warrant.


Objectives of PRE-NCE

Generally the Pre-NCE programme is aimed at upgrading the entry behaviour of the holder of WASC/GCE, SSCE, NECO NABTEB or the Federal Craft Certificate with passes in at least four subjects or the T.C II with relevant credits in their proposed subject combinations in the standard programme.

Specifically the student will at the end of the programme:


a) demonstrate acceptable proficiency comparable to ordinary level standard in the minimum number of core subjects of study;

b) satisfy both internal assessors and external moderator continuous assessment and terminal examination theoretical and practical studies; and,

c) show proven interest to benefit from teacher education and accept teaching. from Pre-NCE to NCE I

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS/ TRANSITION FROM PRE-NCE TO NCE I

To qualify for transition from Pre-NCE to NCE I candidate must:

i. Have participated in the Pre-NCE academic programmes for two semesters.

ii. Obtain a terminal CGPA of not less than 1.50

iii. All Pre-NCE examinations must be externally moderated.

iv. Satisfy other government extant rules on Admission e.g. PCE, JAMB.

v. Where candidates fail to qualify for transition, the College may at its discretion allow for repeat, but not more than once.

vi. The College arranges the Pre-NCE programmes in such a way that the candidates registered for minimum of 18 credits and maximum of 24 credits per semester.

vii. All Pre-NCE candidates are required to register and attend lectures in English and Mathematics as appropriate to their programmes.

Pre-NCE Science and Vocational Subjects

i. WASSC/NECO SSC and GCE (O/L) with at least four passes in English Language, Mathematics and two other Science-related subjects or

ii. Teachers’ Grade II Certificate with passes in English Language, Mathematics/Arithmetic processes, General/Integrated Science and any other science related subjects such as Health Science, Agricultural Science, Applied Biology, Home Economics etc. or

iii. WASSC/NECO (SSC), GCE O/L with four passes at a sitting or five passes at two sittings including English Language, Mathematics and other relevant science subjects.

iv. Federal Craft Certificate (FCC) with passes in four academic subject including Mathematics Science, English Language and Social Studies.
