VOCATIONAL EDUCATION HANDS OVER LEADERSHIP BATON
The School of Vocational Education, Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, witnessed a significant transition in its leadership on Thursday, 24 September 2020, as the School formally handed over the leadership baton from the outgoing Dean, Dr. Titilayo Joyce Fadoju, to the Dean-elect, Mr. James Abiodun Odubiyi.
The leadership transition followed the completion of the stipulated two-year tenure of Dr. Fadoju. The ceremony provided an opportunity for members of the School to appreciate her contributions during her tenure and to welcome the incoming Dean, who was expected to build on the achievements recorded by his predecessors.
In her valedictory address, the outgoing Dean expressed her appreciation to the Provost and members of the College Management for the support and confidence they had shown throughout her tenure. Dr. Fadoju acknowledged that her accomplishments could not have been achieved through individual effort alone. She particularly recognized the commitment, cooperation and dedication of members of staff within the School of Vocational Education.
According to her, the selfless contributions and collective efforts of staff members played a significant role in ensuring the successful administration of the School. She noted that their dedication to their various responsibilities greatly complemented the leadership initiatives undertaken during her tenure.
Representing the Provost at the occasion was Mr. S. A. Makinde, the immediate past Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences and Chairman of the Committee of Deans. In his remarks, he expressed gratitude to God for the successful completion of Dr. Fadoju’s tenure. He described her tenure as a successful one, emphasizing that she had begun her administration well and concluded it satisfactorily.
The Dean-elect, Mr. James Abiodun Odubiyi, in his acceptance speech, expressed his readiness to assume the responsibilities associated with his new position. He promised to adopt a democratic and inclusive leadership approach that would encourage members of staff to contribute meaningfully to the development of the School.
Mr. Odubiyi also emphasized the importance of teamwork and collaboration. He stated that he would put appropriate mechanisms in place to promote cooperation among members of staff and strengthen the collective pursuit of the School’s objectives. He further assured the gathering that the solid foundation established by previous Deans would be maintained and developed rather than discarded.
One of the major highlights of the event was the goodwill messages delivered by former Deans of the School. The former administrators reflected on their experiences and offered words of encouragement to the incoming Dean. They congratulated Mr. Odubiyi on his appointment and wished him wisdom, strength and success throughout his tenure.
The event therefore served as both a celebration of the outgoing administration and a new beginning for the School of Vocational Education.
VOCATIONAL EDUCATION HONOURS RETIREES WITH “LEGACY” BOOK
Earlier, on Wednesday, 2 September 2020, the School of Vocational Education had another memorable occasion as it organized a befitting send-off ceremony for three of its distinguished members of staff: Mr. T. O. Oluwaniran, Mrs. S. A. James and Dr. F. A. O. Akinnusi.
The trio, who served in the Departments of Business Education, Home Economics and Agricultural Science Education respectively, retired from the services of the College after attaining the Federal Government’s stipulated retirement age of 65 years. In recognition of their years of service and contributions to the development of the institution, the School organized a special ceremony in their honour and launched a commemorative book titled Legacy.
The event, which took place at the newly constructed School of Vocational Education Hall, attracted notable personalities from within and outside the College. The gathering provided an avenue for colleagues, friends and associates to celebrate the retirees and reflect on the impact of their years of dedicated service.
Declaring the ceremony open, the Provost, Dr. A. A. Ajayi, expressed appreciation to everyone who attended the occasion. He acknowledged the important contributions made by the three retirees to the development and progress of the College during their years of service. He commended the School for organizing the ceremony and appreciated the Local Organising Committee for its efforts in ensuring the success of the event.
In their separate remarks, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Mrs. Roseline Adebayo, and the Dean of the School of Vocational Education expressed gratitude to guests and colleagues for honouring the retirees with their presence. They described the three retirees as accomplished members of the College community who had served diligently and made valuable contributions to their respective fields.
They noted that the retirees had given their best during their years of active service and had every reason to be celebrated. They also offered prayers for the retirees, wishing them long life, good health and the opportunity to enjoy the rewards of their labour.
Another major attraction of the ceremony was the presentation of the book Legacy, produced in honour of the retirees. The book was reviewed by Dr. P. E. Ezenandu of the Department of English, who provided an assessment of its contents before it was formally unveiled by the Provost.
Goodwill messages were also delivered by the immediate past Chairman of COEASU, Comrade Akin Akinyele, and a Chief Lecturer in the Department of Business Education, Dr. O. A. Abati. Both speakers praised the retirees for their dedication, professionalism and contributions to the College. They wished them a fulfilling and peaceful retirement.
The send-off ceremony ultimately demonstrated the School’s appreciation for its retiring staff and reinforced the value placed on years of dedicated service. It was a celebration of achievement, legacy, and the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of the three retirees.
