FCE ABEOKUTA SET FOR NEW PROVOST AS DR. A. A. AJAYI’S TENURE COMES TO AN END
The Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, is set to welcome a new Chief Executive Officer following the conclusion of the tenure of the incumbent Provost, Dr. Ayodele Adetayo Ajayi, in 2020. Dr. A. A. Ajayi is notable for being the first home-grown Provost of the College, having risen through the ranks within the institution before attaining the highest administrative position.
His tenure as Provost, which spanned from 2012 to 2020 (8 years), was characterised by several developments in infrastructure, staff development, academic programmes and general institutional growth. Over the course of his administration, Dr. Ajayi was widely recognised for his commitment to the advancement of the College and for maintaining a peaceful environment within the institution.
Before becoming Provost, Dr. A. A. Ajayi served as the Deputy Provost and had earlier been a Chief Lecturer in the Department of Christian Religious Studies, School of Arts and Social Sciences. His progression through these positions provided him with considerable knowledge of the College’s academic and administrative structure.
His appointment as Provost was regarded as a recognition of his years of service, professional experience, competence, and contributions to the development of the institution. As a home-grown administrator, he was familiar with the College’s history, structures, challenges, and aspirations. During his two-term tenure between 2012 and 2020 (8 years), the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, recorded a number of developments. These included major infrastructural projects, improvements in staff welfare and capacity development, expansion of academic activities, and strengthening of the College’s facilities.
Among the notable infrastructural projects undertaken during his administration was the construction of a new Administrative Complex, which provided additional space for the College’s administrative operations. The administration also oversaw the construction of five 500-seater lecture halls, thereby increasing the available teaching and learning facilities for students.
Another major facility associated with the period was the Kunle Filani Academic Theatre, which provided an important venue for academic, institutional and other major College activities. The Home Economics Complex and Arts Theatre Building were also among the developments recorded during the period. The administration further provided an Office Complex for 40 Chief Lecturers, contributing to the provision of additional office accommodation for senior academic staff. A Central Car Park was also constructed to improve parking arrangements within the College environment.
To add to the physical infrastructure, attention was given to the provision of equipment and other facilities needed to support teaching, learning, and administration. The College acquired electronic podiums, utility vehicles for Deans and Unions, furniture items for members of staff, and laptops for senior staff.
STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND ACADEMIC ADVANCEMENT
Human capacity development was another important area of attention during Dr. Ajayi’s administration. Staff members were supported through participation in trainings, conferences and seminars, providing opportunities for professional development and exposure to new knowledge and practices.
A notable achievement during the period was the advancement of members of the teaching staff in their academic careers. Many teaching staff members successfully obtained Doctoral degrees, strengthening the academic capacity of the institution.
The administration also placed emphasis on the timely processing and production of students’ academic results and certificates. Students’ results and certificates were produced in good time, helping to facilitate the academic progression and career plans of graduating students.
The College also continued to expand its academic opportunities through degree programmes operated in affiliation with prestigious universities. The Centre for Degree Programmes (CEDEP) operated in affiliation with the University of Ibadan, while the College also had a Lagos State University (LASU) Sandwich Programme.
These programmes contributed to the expansion of the College’s academic activities and increased the opportunities available to students seeking higher qualifications.
CONVOCATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT
During the eight-year period, the College conducted two Convocation ceremonies, providing opportunities to formally celebrate graduating students and recognise their academic achievements.
Another notable development was the establishment of the Directorate of Entrepreneurship (DEWS). The establishment of the Directorate reflected the growing importance of entrepreneurship education and skills development in preparing students for opportunities beyond formal employment.
Several other activities and initiatives commenced during Dr. Ajayi’s tenure, while existing programmes and projects were maintained and further developed. In addition to constructing new buildings, the administration also undertook the renovation of existing structures and improved facilities used for teaching and learning.

One of the broader developments associated with the period was the proposal to transform the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, from a College of Education into a fully-fledged university.
The proposal represented an aspiration for further institutional development and expansion. The growing academic activities of the College, the presence of degree programmes and the continuous development of infrastructure all contributed to discussions about the future status of the institution.
Although the proposal was presented as an initiative for consideration, it demonstrated the ambition to position the College for greater academic development and a broader role within the Nigerian higher education system.
A PEACEFUL ADMINISTRATION
Perhaps one of the significant features of Dr. Ajayi’s tenure was the peaceful atmosphere maintained throughout his two terms in office. The College continued to be regarded as one of the most peaceful tertiary institutions in Ogun State and was associated with the description of a Centre of Excellence, particularly in its role in producing and modelling qualified teachers.
The peaceful environment was important to the implementation of the various academic, administrative, and infrastructural initiatives undertaken during the period. Stability within an institution creates an environment in which staff can perform their duties, students can pursue their studies, and Management can focus on long-term development projects.
Dr. Ajayi’s position as the first home-grown Provost was also significant. Having previously served in various academic and administrative capacities within the College, he brought an understanding of the institution’s internal workings to the office of the Provost.
As his tenure drew to a close in 2020, the College prepared for a transition to a new Chief Executive Officer. The achievements recorded during the tenure were made possible within an atmosphere of relative peace and stability.
