The novel virus known as coronavirus, popularly known as COVID-19, which originally started on on December, 2019 at Wuhan, China, and has spread to many States in Nigeria. The deadly virus which has claimed many lives in the Europe, Asia, United States of America, has also done it's worst in Africa. Presently located in Odeda Local Government, Ogun State, Nigeria, Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta also had a COVID-19 incident which eventually claimed the life of the Head Nurse of Federal College of Education Osiele Abeokuta.
Arising from the death of the Head of Nursing Unit of Federal College of Education, Abeokuta Medical Centre and as a measure to curb the spread of the deadly Corona Virus, the College Management had recently fumigated the College Medical Centre and other places on campus.
The step was taken in line with guidelines laid out by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to avoid the spread of COVID-19 which claimed the life of a Head Nurse while two others were infected with the disease. The College Management thereafter shutdown the College for two weeks. The two medical personnel have tested negative after further tests were carried out on them.
COVID 19: FCE ABEOKUTA ENSURES SAFETY MEASURES
The College Update crew, Federal College of Education, the Centre of Excellence has observed that Federal College of Education, Abeokuta has taken proactive measures in compliance with the Protocols and advisories of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) by providing hand washing facilities, use of inferred thermometers, enforcement of nose masks usage and ensuring of Social/ physical distancing. Federal College of Education, Abeokuta Management recently made available all these measures to ensure strict adherence in order to curb the spread of COVID-19.
The Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajuba recently gave six conditions for schools’ reopening to include – installation of hand washing facilities; equipment for body temperature; provision of body disinfectants at all entering points to their major facilities, including the gates, hostels, classes, offices etc.; decontamination of the whole premises of each Institution; maintenance of the highest level of hygiene and ensuring social/physical distancing in classes and meeting places.
It is worthy of note that Federal College of Education, Abeokuta has therefore met these conditions while awaiting further directives from the Federal Government. It would be recalled that Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria have closed since Thursday, 19th March, 2020 due to the scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic.
