THE 24TH CONVOCATION CEREMONY AT FCE ABEOKUTA
The Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, is set to celebrate its 24th Convocation Ceremony, scheduled to take place from Friday, 27th September to Thursday, 3rd October 2019. The week-long event is organised to formally celebrate and honour graduates of the institution who have successfully completed their academic programmes and are ready to proceed to the next stage of their professional and personal lives.
A convocation ceremony is an important occasion in the life of any higher institution because it provides an opportunity for the institution to officially recognise and celebrate the achievements of its graduands. At the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, convocation ceremonies are organised periodically, usually within an interval of four to five years, to bring together both past and recent graduates whose programmes have qualified them for graduation
The 24th Convocation Ceremony will particularly focus on the award of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) to graduands from the 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 academic sessions. In addition to the presentation of certificates, the occasion will also feature the conferment of the College Fellowship Award on deserving individuals in recognition of their contributions and achievements.
The convocation week is expected to attract a wide range of distinguished guests and stakeholders from within and outside the educational sector. Government officials, education administrators, traditional rulers, academics, professionals, members of the alumni community, parents, guardians and other well-wishers are expected to participate in the various activities. Representatives of television and radio stations, journalists, presenters, professors, doctors and other invited dignitaries will also be present to witness and report the significant occasion.
The following is the official programme of activities for the ceremony:
Friday, 27th September 2019 – Day 1
The opening day will commence with a Media Briefing at 11:00 a.m. at the Council Chamber of the College. The briefing will provide an avenue for members of the press to receive information about the convocation programme and other important developments surrounding the ceremony.
This will be followed by a Jumat Service at 1:30 p.m. at the FCE Central Mosque, allowing members of the Muslim community within the College to participate in prayers and spiritual activities marking the beginning of the convocation celebration.
Sunday, 29th September 2019 – Day 2
The second major activity of the convocation week will be the Thanksgiving Service, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the FCE Chapel of Peace. The service will provide an opportunity for the College community, graduands and invited guests to express gratitude for the successful completion of the academic journey of the graduating students.
Monday, 30th September 2019 – Day 3
The third day will feature several activities beginning with a Keep-Fit Exercise at 7:00 a.m. at the College Sports Centre. This will be followed by a Health Awareness Programme, scheduled for 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at FENACOMS Hall.
Later in the day, an Award/Cultural Night and General Staff Entertainment will take place at 4:00 p.m. at COEASU Hall. The event will combine recognition, cultural presentation, and entertainment for members of staff and other participants.
Tuesday, 1st October 2019 – Day 4
The fourth day will commence with a Theatre Arts Presentation at 12:00 noon at the Theatre Arts Auditorium. The programme will showcase artistic and creative performances by participants.
At 3:00 p.m., the College will host a Games Programme at the Physical and Health Education (PHE) Department, providing an opportunity for recreation, social interaction and entertainment during the convocation week.
Wednesday, 2nd October 2019 – Day 5
One of the major intellectual activities of the celebration will take place on this day. A Convocation Lecture will be delivered at 11:00 a.m. at the Kunle Filani Academic Theatre.
The lecture, titled “Inclusive Education: Implications for Teacher Education Curriculum, Planning and Implementation in Nigeria,” will be delivered by Professor Olukoya Ogen of the Department of History and International Relations, Osun State University, Ikire.
Immediately after the lecture, the College will proceed with the Commissioning of Projects. In the evening, the Reminiscences Night will hold from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will be strictly by invitation. The Alumni Night will also take place at 6:00 p.m. at COEASU Hall, bringing former students and members of the College community together.
Thursday, 3rd October 2019 – Day 6
The final day will begin with Commissioning of Projects II at 9:00 a.m. This will be followed by the main Convocation Ceremony at 10:00 a.m. at the Aduke Maina Hall.
The main ceremony will formally mark the conclusion of the academic journey of the graduands as they are presented for the award of their certificates. The day will also include the Entertainment of Guests, bringing the week-long celebration to a memorable conclusion.
Important Notice to Graduands
All graduands are required to collect their academic gowns from the Student Affairs Office. Gowns will be available from Monday, 30th September 2019, upon payment of the stipulated N3,000 fee.
The 24th Convocation Ceremony represents an important milestone for the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, its graduating students, staff, alumni, families and the wider educational community. It is expected to be a period of thanksgiving, recognition, intellectual engagement, cultural celebration and joyful reunion as the College honours its graduands and celebrates their accomplishments.
