In 1982, the College, together with other institutions of its category, received approval for autonomy under the name Federal College of Education.
The legal foundation for this autonomous status was subsequently established through Decree No. 4 of 14 March 1986, now recognised as an Act, and later reinforced through the Federal College of Education (Amendment) Decree No. 6 of 1 January 1993.
The College eventually moved to its permanent campus in 1983. Today, the institution occupies approximately 632.95 hectares of land along the Abeokuta-Ibadan Road at Osiele. The Federal Government formally vested the land in the College through Gazette No. 41, Volume 64, dated 25 August 1977.
Permanent Campus at Osiele
The permanent campus is situated at Osiele Village, approximately 10 kilometres from Abeokuta along the Abeokuta-Ibadan Road.
The planning, acquisition and initial development of the permanent site were handled through the Federal Ministry of Education. The architectural and consultancy work was undertaken with the assistance of Vivian Uku and Associates of Benin, who served as consultants for the project.
The establishment and subsequent expansion of the College were guided by successive administrators and Provosts who contributed to its academic and institutional development.
Former Provosts and Institutional Leadership
The first Principal of the College was Alhaji Gani A. Belo, who served from January 1976 to 1991. During his fifteen-year tenure, he provided the initial leadership and direction required to establish the institution.
Following his tenure, there was a short transitional period during which the then Deputy Provost, Chief O. O. Abatan, served as Acting Provost.
He was succeeded by Professor E. O. A. Ajayi, who became the second Provost and served from November 1991 to 1999. Professor Ajayi was credited with strengthening the academic culture of the institution and promoting higher standards among members of the College community.
Dr. J. O. Akinmoyewa subsequently became the third Provost, serving from 1999 to 2003. His administration continued the development and consolidation of the achievements of earlier leadership.
After another brief transitional period in which Dr. E. O. Adeniyi, the then Deputy Provost, acted as Provost, Dr. E. O. Filani assumed office on 28 January 2004. He served two terms, with his tenure ending in January 2012.
Dr. Adetayo Ayodeji Ajayi became Provost on 3 April 2012, having previously served as Deputy Provost and Acting Provost. He was subsequently reappointed in 2016 and served through 2020.
