A resumption notice has been signed by Mr. Ben Goong, The Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Republic of Nigeria. According to the press, the resumption notice was signed on behalf of SS3 student (about-to-exit high school students). The resumption date has been scheduled for SS3 students only, to resume on the 4th of August, 2020. Therefore, the SS3 students have only two weeks to prepare for West African Examination Council (WAEC) due to start on the 17th of August, 2020. The unanimous decision was reached at a virtual consultative meeting between The Federal Ministry of Education, Honourable Commissioners for Education in the 36 states of Nigeria, The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), The Proprietors of Privates Schools (NAPPS) and the Chief Executives of Examination Bodies in the country.
Prior to the resumption news, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the Federal Government to closed up all institutions, marketplace, social gatherings etc. in an attempt to curb and to put an end to the virus. The commencement of WAEC usually spans between April to July. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the process and timing becomes different this year. Furthermore, the examination code and conduct will be different as the students will be mandated to observe the COVID-19 protocol for safety and security, such as: putting on the nose mask or nose cover, cleansing and washing of hands with detergents and hand sanitizers, maintaining the social distancing guidelines as reviewed by The World Health Organization. This will aid and assist both the invigilator and the candidates before, during and after the examination at each day of the exams.
The Federal Government of Nigeria will also provide for the safety protocols measures to ensure the safety of the students, invigilator and other individuals in examination halls. WAEC examination are conducted in both public and private accredited schools in Nigeria, therefore, these schools are all expected to cooperate with the directives from the Federal Government of Nigeria. The directives are to help keep safe and secure, the lives of both the candidates and invigilator, along with every other personnel available during the durations of the examination. All other examination protocols are to be kept and followed, including zero tolerance for examination malpractices.
